Fairies live here... A DIY 'Fairy Finder' Project

The second in the "Fairies Live Here" video craft tutorial series - featuring a cute autumnal DIY 'Fairy Finder' craft project :-)

It's hard to believe that the year is drawing to a close already... I'm a little late in the month posting this blog; the days are already darker and the leaves are falling fast from the trees. It's been a busy time here, as ever, with fairies flying the nest and lots of new beginnings for all of the family at the start of the new school year. When times are busy (and even when they are not), I love to recharge and create some pockets of space in my day by walking outside through my local parks, fields, valleys and woods, and it was on one of my walks on an early autumn September afternoon that I had the idea for the craft below. It echoes the fairy door project that I made into a short video tutorial this spring, and I liked the idea of making another video - this time autumnal - as a lovely balancing point and a way of noticing and embracing the season ahead.

The craft itself is inspired by this summer artwork, which was in turn inspired by a family photo, and the childhood endeavour of fairy hunting amidst the trees... I also have a small ornate paper weight magnifier that sat on a shelf in our living room, gifted to me by a family member many years ago, that I find myself using increasingly often to magnify tiny writing on labels and packets. It has a lovely faery aesthetic, and is both a beautiful and functional object. It now sits in my work area, quietly inspiring me and calling to be used at any given opportunity. Musing over it, I also found myself remembering how small children love to play with magnifying glasses to investigate their findings on nature trails and treasure hunts. A small magnifying glass, in the hands of a child, can render previously unseen details in a new and exciting light and spark all kinds of questions and curiosities! The idea of making a 'Fairy Finder' sprang to mind and I set about rummaging through my craft supplies to see what I could create :-)

As with all my crafts, I love to use simple, everyday materials that are either already to hand or easily found in a craft store.

The materials that I used are as follows:

  • Small Embroidery Hoop

  • Garden Wire

  • Some acrylic paint

  • Holographic/iridescent tissue paper/film - it's so pretty!

  • Strips of fabric offcuts

  • Scissors & pliers

  • Ribbons, flowers and gems to embellish

  • High-bond fabric glue

  • Home-made confetti (the simple tutorial can be found in this blog post).

I already had all of the items to hand, including the holographic 'tissue paper' which has been buried in a craft box for years (it is still available to buy online). I loved the idea of the small pieces of confetti moving about inside - adding to the whimsical, playful feel of this cute project :-) I was super pleased with how my Fairy Finder turned out, and once I'd finished, it gave me the perfect excuse to go out exploring and notice the colourful autumnal world around me...

Hope you've enjoyed this video... Wishing you a super cosy autumn with plenty of warmth from the beautiful colours, perhaps some crafting together at home of your own, and of course plenty of playful walks in nature that delight and uplift.

Note: the book artwork and images in the pictures above are all from The Faery Handbook - An Enchanting Compendium of Literature, Lore, Art, Recipes & Projects
